Knowthyself 27/2019: Taking care of the stomach.

The festive season is here.This is the time we have all been waiting for. A time to make merry. A time to get a break from work. Most of us spend better part of our time in jobs we do not like. This is a good time to escape from this stress. 
But the holidays also come with challenges. We become unfair to the stomach. We eat all day. We eat too much and mix the food outside the recommended norm.

Some foods do not digest well together. Women especially are more vulnerable. They are in the kitchen most of the time. This is why gastrointestinal cases occur up to six times more often in women than in men. A recent Survey revealed that nearly half of all women experience heightened stress during the holidays.

This can dramatically contribute worsening of existing stomach conditions or originate other issues.How can we take good care of the stomach during this long holiday season?

Here are some tips;

a. Eat properly to help your digestion

Do eat in a rush your. Take time to eat slowly. Try putting your fork down between bites and chew each mouthful well. Reduce the size of your portions at mealtimes. Eat regularly and try not to skip meals. Avoid eating a big meal just before you go to bed. Eat your last meal at least 4 hours before getting to bed. Avoid any heavy activities immediately after a meal. Allow 2 hours before you go to the gym. Make sure you take enough water.

b. Beat stress

A person feels unease in the stomach during times of stress. That's because anxiety and worry can upset the delicate balance of digestion. Stress can slow down digestion causing bloating, pain and constipation. In other people, it speed it up, causing diarrhea and frequent trips to the loo. Some people lose their appetite completely. Stress can also worsen digestive conditions like stomach ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome.

It is advisable to avoid eating when you're feeling very anxious, stressed or unhappy. It also helps your digestion if you avoid arguing at the dinner table. Getting angry can put you off your food or make eating harder. Try to keep mealtimes happy and relaxed.

c. Stop smoking to prevent acid reflux.

Smoking can weaken the muscles that control the lower end of the food pipe and allow acid from the stomach to travel in the wrong direction back up. This process is known as reflux. Reflux causes the symptoms of heartburn and can result to aggravated stomach ulcers and bowel inflammation conditions of the bowel. Smoking is one of the high risk factor for stomach cancer.
